Title
Research Fellow in Galaxy Evolution - ML4251
Vacancy Description
School of Physics & Astronomy, Salary: £30,424 - £36,298 per annum, Fixed term: 2 years, Start: 1 May 2014 or as soon as possible thereafter
Details

The School of Physics & Astronomy is seeking an ambitious Research Fellow to work on extragalactic astronomy.

Applications are invited for an active researcher in the area of numerical simulations of galaxies, to study the concurrent evolution of morphological and spectral properties of galaxies. The successful candidate should have experience in the field of galaxy evolution, the development and analysis of models of galaxy formation and evolution and/or the interpretation of large astronomical datasets. Experience with hydrodynamics and radiative transfer techniques will be advantageous.

You will be expected to play a leading role in interpreting the spectral energy distributions and morphologies of galaxies in both spectroscopic and multi-wavelength galaxy surveys, from low to high redshift, using systematic comparisons to galaxy evolution models.

The School of Physics & Astronomy offers a vibrant and modern work environment. The SEDmorph research group has exclusive access to a 384 core cluster. Astrophysics research in St Andrews combines theoretical, numerical and observational research in extra-solar planets, star formation, active galactic nuclei, galaxy evolution and cosmology. The galaxy evolution group currently comprises a core of 2 teaching staff, 4 post-docs and 4 PhD students, with a further 4 teaching staff, 2 post-docs and 4 students attending the weekly group meetings.

You should have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field, with experience in galaxy evolution modelling.

Starting 1 May 2014, or as soon as possible thereafter.  The appointment will be for a period of two years, and is in collaboration with Dr. Vivienne Wild funded by an ERC starting grant including a generous allowance for travel.

Informal enquiries to Vivienne Wild, e-mail: vw8@st-andrews.ac.uk

More details about the SEDmorph project are available at: http://www-star.st-and.ac.uk/~vw8/SEDmorph/welcome.html

Candidates should send a CV, publication list, and a brief statement of research interest.  Referees will be contacted automatically by the University after an application has been received.

Interviews will be held in February 2014
