Head of Anatomy (Chair/Reader/Senior Lecturer) – AC2185SB

The University of St Andrews is Scotland’s first university and one of the oldest in the world. Consistently ranked among the top universities in the UK, St Andrews has an international reputation for the highest quality of research-led teaching built on its portfolio of world-leading research. Now in its seventh century, the University provides a uniquely stimulating environment which values the life of the mind across the Faculties of Science, Arts and Divinity, and Medicine.

The School of Medicine has a strong tradition of anatomical teaching, with a state-of-the-art dissecting room, and is consistently ranked highly in national student satisfaction surveys for the quality of its teaching, being first place in UK medical schools in 2019. In order to consolidate and continue this success, it now seeks an energetic and enthusiastic individual to lead the Anatomy Department and expand both teaching and research.

The successful candidate will be a senior academic and there is flexibility to appoint at Professor or Senior Lecturer level, depending on the successful candidate’s individual strengths and career stage. The appointment will be either Education Focused or Education and Research, depending on the preference of the successful candidate.

Candidates will have a demonstrated commitment to delivering high quality teaching within the broad field of Medicine and an international research reputation in Anatomy or Imaging. They will bring strong leadership skills and the ability to develop a long-term strategy for the Department; excellent teaching skills and experience of promoting knowledge exchange; and they will have a track record of attracting external funding and publishing research that strengthens or complements work in the School.

Candidates should hold a PhD in a cognate discipline and will be Licensed Teachers of Anatomy, with the ability to pursue research influence and impact, while attracting and recruiting outstanding graduate students. Capable of teaching the subject to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds, they will also be able to play an active role in building interdisciplinary links across and outwith the University, while supporting public engagement.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic communities and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in academic posts at the University.
