We require a committed researcher to work in a collaborative project between Dr Clarissa Czekster (School of Biology), Professor David Harrison (School of Medicine) and NuCana plc which is headquartered in Edinburgh. The work will entail developing novel enzyme catalysts to contribute to NuCana’s early Drug Discovery and Drug Development studies.

The successful applicant will incorporate enzymes into the synthetic route used to produce a set of ProTide prodrugs known to possess antiviral and anticancer activity. They will apply technologies such as site directed mutagenesis and directed evolution to enzymes of interest to expand their substrate scope and efficiency.

They will take responsibility for the characterisation of enzyme variants, as well as optimization of reaction conditions and ProTide characterization. The successful candidate will be aware of specific requirements of industry/academic collaborations, and prior industrial experience is highly desirable. Prior experience with directed evolution and/or enzyme evolution is an essential criterium.

He/she will be reliable, creative, knowledgeable and hard-working, capable of delivering high-quality data in a timely manner.
