Research Fellow in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics - AR2027ML

As part of an EPSRC sponsored 5 year research program we are seeking a postdoctoral research fellow to work on aspects of thermodynamic and transport properties of designer heterostructures of quantum materials / strongly correlated electron systems. The research is embedded in the wider drive within the Condensed Matter Physics group at the School of Physics and Astronomy to explore novel phenomena in strongly correlated electron systems by exploiting the possibilities of thin film growth techniques as part of the centre for Designer Quantum Materials. This wider effort comprises a new centre for MBE growth of transition metal oxides and dichalcogenides, groups specialising in spectroscopic studies (STM and ARPES) and neutron scattering as well as theory groups with established collaborations with the universities of Bristol, Edinburgh, London and Oxford, the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Diamond, Max Planck Institutes for Solid State Research (Stuttgart, Germany) and Chemical Physics of Solids (Dresden, Germany) as well as Cornell University (USA).

The project will involve the design and implementation of bespoke experimental apparatus based on microfabricated structures suitable for extreme conditions (low temperatures, high magnetic fields). The scientific focus of the research program will be on phenomena related to superconductivity, topologically nontrivial band structures and magnetic phases in low dimensional systems. The candidate must have a PhD in experimental physics at the time of the start date, an excellent knowledge of solid state physics, and ideally direct experience of work in a clean room environment, on the development of non-commercial research apparatus for high precision measurements and/or on sub-K low temperature experiments.

The post is initially for 12 months with possible extension of up to 3 years.
