Research Assistant - AR1991SB

We have an exciting opportunity for a researcher to investigate the variation of stable isotope levels in arctic seal populations. The post involves participation in our multidisciplinary study ‘Can we detect changes in Arctic Ecosystems?’ (ARISE). Recently funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), as part of the ‘Changing Arctic Ocean’ programme, ARISE is a UK-based multi-institutional project, with strong collaborative links to partners at international research institutes. Our aim is to make use of novel stable isotope methodology with analysis of time-series samples on decadal scales to determine how the base of the food web and top predators are responding to environmental change across large spatial and temporal scales in the Arctic.

The post-holder will investigate stable isotope (SI) signatures in harp and ringed seals, analysing tissue samples (especially teeth) using cutting-edge compound-specific stable isotope analysis (CSIA) techniques with the aim of learning about the trophic level at which seals have been foraging over a long period of time corresponding to the years represented in the sample archive (decades). The post-holder will have the opportunity to work with colleagues at Liverpool, a centre of expertise in CSIA as an emerging ecological 'tool'. The results of CSIA and bulk stable isotope analysis will be interpreted in relation to environmental drivers, diet, and vital rates in the seals.

The researcher will be based at the University of St Andrews with occasional research visits to Liverpool. The post is available immediately for 6 months full time, or can be up to 18 months on a part-time basis.
