Research Fellow - AR2509RSB

We are currently seeking an excellent postdoctoral research associate to work on a catalysis and chemical biology project funded by the Leverhulme Trust. The successful candidate will join the research group of Dr Allan Watson in the School of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews.

This project is part of a collaboration with Prof Glenn Burley at the University of Strathclyde.

The main objective of the project is to develop fundamental understanding of the copper-catalysed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC reaction) using novel alkynes. This information will be used to develop new methods for selective and efficient tagging of biomolecules in live cells. Central to this work is an understanding of the mechanistic operation of the chemistry, its potential scope, and then how it can be leveraged towards establishing effective bioconjugation methods. The work will involve organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, characterisation, kinetic profiling, and methodology development.

The project will involve placements within Prof Burley’s group at Strathclyde where novel methods and compounds will be explored as new agents for biomolecule tagging in cell lysate and in live cells.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD with a strong background in organic chemistry. Experience of catalysis and mechanistic investigation would be advantageous. In addition, candidates will be expected to demonstrate that they are an effective and committed team member and be prepared to work closely with other lab members and to supervise junior students. The ideal candidate will have excellent communication skills, demonstrable through written reports/publications, presentations, and a proven track record in the specific areas aligned with this project.

Funding is available for two years: The position is available from 1 September 2021 and is a 12-month position in the first instance, with a further 12 months subject to mutual agreement.

Previous applicants need not apply.

Further information and informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Allan Watson, email: aw260@st-andrews.ac.uk, Tel: 01334 46 7285.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian, Minority or Ethnic (BAME) community and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in research posts at the University.
