Public Engagement Officer - AD2034SB

The University of St Andrews is seeking a dynamic, innovative individual with extensive experience of public engagement and culture change activity to join our central public engagement team embedded in our corporate communications unit.

The role holder will primarily maintain and enrich a programme of activities designed to embed a culture of public engagement with research institutionally and to inspire interest, stimulate debate, and create dialogue between internal and external groups about our research. The successful applicant will be responsible for developing, delivering, and evaluating a diverse portfolio of activities such as a bespoke programme of training for public engagement, annual public engagement with research awards, and an annual internal public engagement conference. You will maintain and build upon two internal informal networks that support best practice and knowledge exchange in engagement: the public engagement facilitator’s network for PER professionals, and the engaged practice group which includes a wider group of engagement practitioners from across the University. You will also advise researchers in the preparation of grant applications and evaluation strategies for evidencing impact.

To undertake this role, the role holder will have a full understanding of drivers and barriers to involvement in public engagement, including knowledge of the expectations of principle research funding bodies and current developments in the area of public engagement. You will be educated to degree level with extensive experience of working in public engagement and of managing projects and events. You will have excellent communication skills including demonstrable well-developed abilities and judgment in using social media. You will be highly self-motivated, able to work alone and in collaboration with others, and capable of working with people at all levels of seniority.

The post is available for one year in the first instance.

This is a full-time role of 36.25 hours per week, normally worked Monday to Friday, with limited out of hours working and travel. Job shares and flexible working arrangements will be considered which can be discussed at interview.
