We wish to appoint a Chair of Public Health Medicine who will also assume the Directorship of the Mackenzie Institute for Early Diagnosis on an interim basis for a period of three years with a view to establishing it on a firm footing, and readying it for the appointment of a full-time Director.

You will be an outstanding scholar of international standing in the field of public health, health improvement and protection, and early detection of disease with a proven track record of securing significant grant funding and leading high quality, externally-funded research projects. You will also have considerable experience of running multi-disciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will be expected to have a range of interests which strengthen and complement those in the School of Medicine and the fledgling Institute and to make an outstanding contribution to both through research outputs, ideally in areas including public health and pandemic preparedness. You will have a track record of successful leadership in interactions with Health authorities, policy makers and governments at very senior level, and will be expected to represent the University of St Andrews prominently within the UK and international communities.

Candidates will hold an MBChB / MD and a doctorate in a cognate discipline and will be expected to be capable of teaching the subject to honours and taught postgraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds in addition to supervising doctoral students. The primary criteria for appointment will be evidence of an internationally-recognised achievement and research record, a clear programme of anticipated research activity for the coming years, a significant research funding record, and a proven ability to shape, lead and represent a high-powered academic team such as the Mackenzie Institute, as well as supporting other activities of the School of Medicine.
