Dr. Juan Varela has recently established a neurophotonics lab at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, aiming to understand how nanoscale changes in the extracellular space of the brain facilitate clearance of protein aggregates.
We are seeking to recruit a postdoc to evaluate the role of dead-space microdomains of the extracellular space in the accumulation of protein aggregates and subsequent neurodegeneration. We are looking for a well motivated person with an academic background in molecular and cellular neuroscience of Alzheimer’s disease. The candidate will work on the organisation of the brain at the nano-scale and how this organisation may influence the aggregation of proteins such as amyloid-beta.
Experience with high-resolution microscopy as well as experience in protein biochemistry would be highly advantageous. The funds for this post are available for one year through a Pilot Grant funded by Alzheimer’s Research UK.
