Title
Research Fellows in Photonics - SB1646
Vacancy Description
School of Physics and Astronomy, Salary: £31,342 - £34,233 per annum, Start: As soon as possible, Fixed term for 12 months
Details
We aim to build upon a range of internationally recognised work in the areas of photonics and developed applications at St Andrews. A number of new fixed term positions are available (up to four appointments will be made) each of one year duration in the first instance. The topic areas in which we aim to recruit are:

  • The use of shaped or ‘structured’ light for imaging, sensing and advanced microscopy. The shaping will be performed using dynamic diffractive optical elements and optimal transmission of light in random media. In this topic area we aim to improve depth penetration for imaging, microscopy and trapping.

  • The study and use of random or disordered media for the characterisation and measurement of laser beam parameters. This includes laser wavelength and combines both experiment and theory.

  • Computational photonics for studies of optical manipulation and beam propagation. This post will aim to develop numerical models using commercially available software and C++ programming.

  • Application of the optical eigenmode concept (orthogonal structured illumination) to single photon generation, propagation and detection.

Informal enquiries (NOT full applications) to: Professor Kishan Dholakia, kd1@st-andrews.ac.uk, tel: 01334 463184 or Dr Michael Mazilu, mm17@st-andrews.ac.uk, tel: 01334 463210

Applications are particularly welcome from women, who are under-represented in Science posts at the University.  You can find out more about Equality & Diversity at https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/.

The University of St Andrews is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all, which is further demonstrated through its working on the Gender and Race Equality Charters and being awarded the Athena SWAN award for women in science, HR Excellence in Research Award and the LGBT Charter;  http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.
