Applications Developer (Research Computing) - MR1091
Vacancy Description
IT Services, Salary: £30,728 - £36,661 per annum, * Start: As soon as possible
Details

IT Services is looking for a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in e-Research to join the Research Computing Team as Applications Developer (Research Computing). The team currently consists of two liaison staff and one Applications Developer.

Owing to its focus on supporting research, the team has, where feasible, adopted an open development method, which includes the use of open source software and open standards in preference over proprietary software and standards. As a result the Application Developer (Research Computing) will work in the exciting context of growing national and international developer communities.

In addition to developing solutions from scratch, recent technical implementations have included use of Fedora Commons, Islandora, Alfresco, CKAN and Wordpress. Engagement with relevant Open Source communities is expected.   In addition to developing technical solutions to meet the needs of research projects from across the University, this post represents a fantastic opportunity for the successful candidate to work within the important institutional contexts of the new and rapidly growing areas of research data management and digital preservation.

The successful candidate will possess a degree or equivalent in Computer Science or in another relevant subject with a significant IT component. Experience in designing, developing and testing software using a range of technologies and programming languages is essential. The role also requires a thorough and methodical approach and the ability to communicate technical information to a range of technical and non-technical audiences.

It is essential that the successful candidate either has or is willing to develop expertise in supporting the rapidly developing technical needs of electronic research across a wide range of academic subjects. This includes the ability to develop new skills as required, such as TEI, RDF and OWL, the W3C Linked Data standard; and relevant metadata standards such as TEI header, VRA Core 4, Dublin Core.

While all production servers used by the Research Computing Service are maintained by the IT Services Systems Team, Application Developers are expected to maintain and configure test and development servers running Debian Linux and Apache/Tomcat along with relevant server-side software.

*Appointment at grade 6T (Salary: £28,132-£29,837) will be considered for those candidates who do not yet have the necessary experience/training to undertake the full remit of the role with the job remit to be altered accordingly and a structured development package put in place. Development to allow the successful candidate to undertake the full remit of the role and to move to grade 6 point 30 (salary £30,728) is expected to take place over a period of 12-36 months.
