The School of Modern Languages is seeking to appoint for a fixed term of two years a Research Fellow in Arabic from 1 September 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the ERC funded research project “LANGUAGE–PHILOLOGY–CULTURE: Arab Cultural Semantics in Transition” (ERC Starting Grant 312458 ARSEM).

 The project explores the pivotal role of language consciousness in the history of Arab culture and studies the semantic development of the vocabulary of the Arabic language. The successful candidate will be expected to work under the supervision of Dr Kirill Dmitriev, the Principal Investigator in the project, and in close cooperation with other members of the project’s team.

The successful candidate will be expected to conduct her/his own research on a subject related to the project and leading to the publication of a monograph. The area of research is open, but it should focus on either Classical or Early Modern Arabic literature and/or philology.

The successful candidate will be expected to have completed a PhD, and have an excellent knowledge of Arabic and English.
