The University of St Andrews wishes to appoint two Early Stage Researchers for a Marie Curie ITN on Power and Institutions in Medieval Islam and Christendom.  They will be expected to undertake PhDs at St Andrews and participate in the other activities of the ITN.

Marie Curie regulations require that candidates must not have been resident in the UK for more than 12 of the last 36 months; have a degree that qualifies the candidate for a PhD in the field; have less than four years research experience, normally from the degree which qualifies the candidate for a PhD.

The first PhD will be on ‘Writing and memory in institutions’, focusing on issues relating to monasticism in the period up to 1050. Research experience in this field, together with Latin, is required. Interest in issues of gender will be preferred.

The second PhD will be on ‘Creation and transmission of law’, focusing on the twelfth century.  Old French will be required, with any other mediaeval languages desirable.  Interest and experience in using both legal and literary texts will be preferred.

Both PhDs must take a comparative approach, as this is integral to the ITN.
