An exciting opportunity for a Bioinformatician is available at the University of St Andrews. The post holder will join a dynamic and multidisciplinary community and will play a key role in providing bioinformatic support and development to diverse projects across different research areas. St Andrews possesses a wide range of research programmes in functional genomics, bioinformatics and algorithm development applied to biomedical research, evolutionary biology and cell biology. St Andrews researchers lead large international projects in infectious diseases, neurodevelopmental disorders and marine biology, all heavily involving bioinformatics approaches. Unique research opportunities are offered by the close links with research groups at the School of Computer Science working in algorithm development and machine learning.
The Bioinformatics Unit was established in 2012 to drive and assist world-class research in these areas. The Unit manages a recently installed server fully dedicated to bioinformatics research. We are recruiting an exceptional person to participate in the development and use of data-driven approaches within medical and biological research across the University.

Applicants must be familiar with Linux and shell scripting, with several years’ experience in at least one major programming language, and willing to work with unfamiliar languages as required for specific projects. Experience in the analysis of genome data sets is required, for example genome assembly, genome-wide association studies, gene expression, massive phylogeny reconstruction, ChIP-seq or genome informatics. Good communications and management skills, together with flexibility and clear vision and understanding of the advances in the field, are essential.
The role will include:
- Active participation in the design and implementation of bioinformatics analyses and pipelines.
- Hacking, scripting, debugging and algorithm development.Advising and training researchers both informally and through structured workshops, to make most effective use of their sequence and metadata.
- Systems administration of the Unit’s 192-core computer cluster (http://bioinformatics.st-andrews.ac.uk)
- Lead the management and expansion of the St Andrews Bioinformatics Unit
The post will be available immediately and is for three years in first instance. It will be based in the School of Medicine but will involve working with groups based in the Schools of Biology, Chemistry and Computer Science. For informal enquiries please contact Dr Silvia Paracchini (
