Research Fellow (BSRC) - AR1668SB
Vacancy Description
School of Biology, Biomedical Sciences Research Complex, Salary: £31,342 - £34,233 per annum, Start: As soon as possible, Fixed term for 3 years
Details
A three-year position for a well-motivated postdoctoral scientist is available in the laboratory of Dr Marcus Bischoff at the Biomedical Sciences Research Complex (BSRC), University of St Andrews, to study the mechanisms that underlie the coordination of cell behaviours during tissue morphogenesis.

The Bischoff lab is interested in how cell behaviours, such as cell migration and cell shape changes, work together to shape tissues and organs during development. We investigate cell behaviours during the morphogenesis of the adult abdominal epidermis of Drosophila using quantitative in vivo 4D-microscopy (Bischoff and Cseresnyes, 2009). This allows us to analyse cell behaviours in great detail, both on tissue level and on the level of individual cells.

Recently, we have shown that the larval epithelial cells (LECs) display complex behaviour during abdominal morphogenesis, as they migrate and constrict apically (Bischoff, 2012). The aims of this postdoctoral project are to gain insights into how these cells undergo dynamic changes in their behaviour and to study cytoskeletal activity that underlies such behavioural change.

The post will be for 36 months and is funded by the BBSRC. Candidates must hold a PhD in Biological Sciences (or equivalent). A strong background in cell or developmental biology is essential. We especially welcome applications from candidates with a keen interest and experience in microscopy and image analysis. Knowledge in Drosophila genetics is desirable.

We offer an exciting and stimulating work environment with local and international scientific collaborations. The BSRC conducts world-class multidisciplinary research spanning Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Medicine. It houses world-class mass spectrometry and microscopy facilities, as well as expertise in advanced optical techniques and single-molecule visualization.

Besides a great research environment, St Andrews provides a beautiful place to live, with the sea on the doorstep and Edinburgh and the Highlands only about 1.5 hours’ drive away.

More information on the lab can be found at: http://synergy.st-andrews.ac.uk/bischoff/

Informal enquiries can be made to Dr Marcus Bischoff (e-mail: mb273@st-andrews.ac.uk)

The School of Biology would particularly welcome applications from suitably qualified females. The School of Biology at the University of St Andrews is fully engaged with the Athena SWAN programme and has recently submitted an application for Silver award status. The School values equality and diversity across its workforce and offers a family friendly environment.

The University of St Andrews is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all, which is further demonstrated through its working on the Gender and Race Equality Charters and being awarded the Athena SWAN award for women in science, HR Excellence in Research Award and the LGBT Charter;  http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.
