Details

The School of Physics & Astronomy is seeking an ambitious Research Fellow to work on modelling of stellar magnetic fields.

Applications are invited for an active researcher in the area of magnetic field modelling with the aim of studying the impact of stellar winds and mass ejections on exoplanets. The successful candidate should have experience in magnetohydrodynamics and numerical modelling of stellar magnetic fields. Experience in modelling stellar winds would be advantageous.

The School of Physics & Astronomy offers a young, vibrant and modern work environment. Astrophysics research in St Andrews combines theoretical, numerical and observational research in star formation, protoplanetary discs, extra-solar planets, stellar magnetic activity, star-planet interaction, gravitational lensing, active galactic nuclei, galaxy dynamics and cosmology.

You should have a PhD in astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related field, with experience in magnetohydrodynamic modelling.  Possible start dates are from September 2016.  The appointment will be for a period of 1.5 years with possible extension subject to grant funding, and is in collaboration with Prof Moira Jardine funded by an STFC consolidated grant with funds for high performance computing and travel. Benefits include medical coverage by the National Health Service.

Informal enquiries to Moira Jardine, e-mail: mmj@st-andrews.ac.uk

Candidates should send a CV, publication list, and a brief statement of research experience and interest, and arrange for three letters of reference to be provided.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, who are under-represented in manual positions at the University.  You can find out more about Equality & Diversity at https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/.

The University of St Andrews is committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all, which is further demonstrated through its working on the Gender and Race Equality Charters and being awarded the Athena SWAN award for women in science, HR Excellence in Research Award and the LGBT Charter;  http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.

Interviews will be held in August 2016
