Applications are invited for the post of Reader in Analytic and Exegetical Theology in the new Logos Institute (Director: Prof Alan J. Torrance) in the School of Divinity, an internationally renowned centre of excellence. Applicants must have appropriate academic qualifications and expertise either in systematic theology or in biblical scholarship and exegesis, with broad research competence in both. They should share the aims of analytic theology and be committed to constructive interdisciplinary engagement between systematic theologians, biblical scholars, and philosophical theologians. A strong record of research and publications, and the capacity to make an immediate contribution to the research excellence of the School are essential. A clear programme of anticipated research activity over the coming years is expected as is experience of successful teaching, assessment, and supervision in a tertiary context.
The establishment of the Logos Institute is the result of a generous grant from the Templeton Religion Trust and matched funding from the University of St Andrews. In addition to its Director, the Reader and a fixed term Lecturer/Director of communication (Dr Andrew B. Torrance), there will be four, part-time, Professorial Fellows: Professors Oliver Crisp, C. Stephen Evans, Peter van Inwagen and Michael Rea.
Professor N.T. Wright will oversee the exegetical component and Dr A.J. Cotnoir the philosophical component. Several other biblical scholars and theologians from Divinity will also participate in the institute’s research. The key research topics during its first three years will be: a) God’s relationship to time and history; b) persons: divine and human; c) reconciliation and forgiveness: divine and human; and d) questions bearing on the meaning and purpose of human existence.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to research supervision, the teaching of its new MLitt programme and honours modules, as well as participating in the weekly seminars, colloquia, conferences, and other research-related activities of the institute. In addition, she/he will coordinate an annual 5-day summer school for school pupils and share in the administrative duties of the institute and the School.
The Logos Institute is part of the School of Divinity and the successful applicant will be expected to work closely with colleagues across the range of the School’s disciplines.
Appointment will be from 1 August 2016.
