Vacancy Description
English Language Teaching, Salary: £31,656 - £37,768 per annum, Start Date: 1 October 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter, Fixed Term: 11 months
Details
English Language Teaching (ELT) at the University of St Andrews offers a range of programmes and courses for both current and prospective students, typically combining the study of academic subjects with English for Academic Purposes, with a focus on writing, criticality, register and communication skills in a discipline-specific context.  Programmes are taught in conjunction with subject specialists, so that language and study skills, communication skills, subject knowledge and research skills are integrated into a cohesive programme, providing excellent preparation for university study.  Our summer courses offer a range of academic subject ‘tasters’ combined with associated English language, writing and communication skills, and additional workshops to introduce students to various aspects of university life and academic culture.

We would like to appoint a well-qualified, experienced and motivated teaching professional to cover the current Summer Schools Director’s maternity leave.  The role has two elements:  teaching on programmes and modules throughout the academic year (up to 600 hours), and directing our expanding summer school provision.

Summer Courses responsibilities include:
• directing the ongoing planning and development of all aspects of our summer courses
• coordinating and contributing to the teaching in Summer 2017
• ensuring the continuing quality and relevance of the content and develop new materials and assessments as required
• Liaising with a range of stakeholders including the Deputy Director and Director of Teaching on matters of academic administration, the Marketing & Recruitment Manager on promotional matters and the interviewing and admission of prospective students and with other Programme Directors on curriculum development and assessment.
• You will also liaise with academic stakeholders to ensure the continuing relevance of the programme content.

Year-round teaching responsibilities include:
• contributing to the overall teaching and learning within ELT
• teaching on foundation programmes, pre-sessional programmes and EAP modules
• preparation and development of teaching and learning materials
• preparation and invigilation of assessments as required
• Timely completion of associated reporting and other administrative requirements.

In addition to a good first degree, you will probably be educated to at least Masters level in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, Translation or similar (we will consider applicants currently undertaking a Masters) and you will have a teaching qualification and significant teaching experience, including recent experience of teaching EAP at university level in the UK.  You will have demonstrable cultural awareness; good administrative skills and be used to working collaboratively as part of a successful team.

All interviewees will be required to teach a short lesson as part of the selection process.

This post is for 11 months, starting 1 October 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter to cover maternity leave.

Informal enquiries can be made to Jane Magee, email: jdm1@st-andrews.ac.uk.
