A position for a well-motivated postdoctoral scientist is available in the laboratory of Dr Judith Sleeman at the Biomedical Sciences Research Complex (BSRC), University of St Andrews, to study the involvement of the paraspeckle nuclear domain in Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1.

The Sleeman lab is interested in how defects in RNA metabolism and cellular structure are associated with inherited human neuromuscular diseases including Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). The significance of accurate regulation of RNA production, processing and function is clear from the increasing number of diseases in which defects in RNA metabolism are implicated. We are primarily interested in the physical organisation of RNA processing within mammalian cells, and use techniques including fixed and live-cell microscopy, advanced fluorescence microscopy techniques, electron microscopy and proteomics to address our research questions (Clelland et al, 2012; Coleman et al 2014; Prescott et al 2014).

The post will be for 12 months in the first instance with likely extension for a further 24 months. The project is funded by Muscular Dystrophy UK and is a collaboration with Dr Archa Fox, Perth, Australia. Candidates must hold a PhD in Biological Sciences (or equivalent). A strong background in cell biology is essential. We especially welcome applications from candidates with a keen interest and experience in microscopy and image analysis or proteomics. Knowledge of RNA metabolism and experience working with RNA are desirable.
