Title
Research Fellow in Chemistry - ME4817
Vacancy Description
School of Chemistry, Salary: £30,122 - £31,948 per annum, Start Date: Early 2013, Fixed Term: 1 year
Details
The project will involve the discovery and investigation of new inorganic materials as electrodes and electrolytes for lithium and sodium batteries and will be working with Professor Peter G. Bruce FRS. A background in solid state chemistry or electrochemistry would be an advantage. Two posts are available.

Energy storage is more important today than at any time in human history.  The rechargeable lithium battery possesses the highest energy density of any electrochemical energy storage device.  It has revolutionised consumer electronics.  However, to make a step change in the technology and to realise a sodium-ion battery, new materials with new properties and combinations of properties are required. We shall investigate new lithium and sodium intercalation compounds and solid electrolytes for lithium and sodium batteries.

The work will involve the synthesis (including sol-gel and hydrothermal methods) of new materials and their characterisation using XRD, SEM, TEM, ICP, XPS, XANES, as well as electrochemical methods, (cycling, ac impedance).

The start date is early 2013 and will be for one year in the first instance, with the expectation of extension.

Closing Date:  18 January 2013
