Student Services, Salary: £17.61 per hour

Student Services provides a comprehensive and confidential support service for students, which includes advising in money, international, academic and disability issues, as well as offering personal and emotional advice via counselling, wellbeing and mental health services.

The role holder will work as part of the Counselling, Mental Health and Wellbeing Team within Student Services to assist students who present with a range of issues relating to their student experience. Depending on the role holder’s qualifications and experience, they will support the University in meeting the needs of students with varying degrees of mental health problems, from sub-clinical/transitory to complex and enduring.

You will work within the Student Services Matching Care model, delivering evidence based interventions and assistance to students in a manner that promotes their autonomy and independence. The unit does not offer directionless long-term therapy, but provides the lightest, effective, evidence-based intervention and solution-focused support, using mainly CBT, ACT and DBT approaches to assist and empower the student to continue in their studies.

Meetings with students are held primarily face-to-face and one-on-one, but a growing number take place by telephone/email support, using online tools and assessment measures. The role holder works as a member of the Student Services team in a flexible, collaborative and responsive manner. 

The applicant will be educated to degree level or equivalent, and will have relevant professional qualifications and experience of working with adults and / or young people with mental health difficulties. Candidates will belong to a relevant professional body, e.g. BABCP, HCPC. Experience of working within a further or higher education setting is desirable and knowledge of relevant legislation relating to mental health and disability is essential.  

The role holder will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and will be able to work independently and as part of the wider Student Services team. The role holder will work with colleagues who work as Wellbeing Advisers, Counsellors, Coaches, Psychologists and Mental Health Coordinators.  Additionally, they will liaise with academic schools and the wider University as required and will work closely with external agencies (such as General Practitioners, Community Mental Health Teams and Social Work), to ensure a collaborative and holistic approach. The ability to work flexibly and as part of a multi-disciplinary team is essential.

An ability to remain calm under pressure, work in a fast-paced environment and to prioritise work is vital. The successful candidate will be joining a dynamic, forward thinking service, working alongside highly qualified, experienced and motivated colleagues.
