School of Geography and Sustainable Development, Salary: £33,199 per annum, Start: 1 July 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter, Fixed term for 12 months

The School of Geography and Sustainable Development at St Andrews is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for 1 year, in the area of numerical modelling of glacier calving.  The position is available from 1 July 2019, or as soon as possible thereafter.  

The development of universal 'calving laws' is a long-standing problem in glaciology, made more urgent by the need to predict the impact of climate change. This post is part of the NERC-funded CALISMO project (Calving Laws for Ice Sheet Models), which aims to use detailed process models to develop simple calving parameterizations for use in predictive models. Model tools include the Helsinki Discrete Element Model HiDEM, the Full Stokes discrete element model ELMER/Ice and ice-sheet models such as BISICLES and PISM. Model runs will be undertaken using generic and real-world glacier geometries, and the results will be used to analyze the stress conditions associated with different calving styles, and develop new general calving laws for use in predictive ice-sheet models.    

The researcher works closely with Prof. Doug Benn and Dr Joe Todd, and will be responsible for undertaking a range of model simulations to explore the response of calving glaciers to varying environmental conditions. Applicants must be proficient in using ELMER/Ice (or equivalent), including its application to calving glaciers. The researcher will also be responsible for preparing manuscripts for submission to leading journals.
