Research Fellow – AR2220MR
School of Chemistry

Biomedical Sciences Research Complex and School of Chemistry, Salary: £34,304 - £37,467 per annum, pro rata, Fixed Term: 9 months in the first instance, Start: 1 January 2022

We are currently seeking an excellent postdoctoral research associate to work on a catalysis project funded by the EPSRC. The successful candidate will join the research group of Prof Allan Watson in the School of Chemistry at St Andrews University.

The main objective of the project is to develop catalytic asymmetric methodology for the preparation of enantioenriched heterocyclic scaffolds. The methods will be based on asymmetric organocatalysis. We seek to understand the mechanistic operation of the chemistry, its potential scope, and then how it can be leveraged towards establishing access to potentially bioactive molecules. The work will involve organic synthesis, organometallic chemistry, characterisation, kinetic profiling, and methodology development.

You should have a PhD with a strong background in organic chemistry and catalysis. In addition, candidates will be expected to demonstrate that they are an effective and enthusiastic team member and be prepared to work closely with other lab members and to supervise junior students working on related projects. You will have excellent communication skills, demonstrable through written reports/publications, presentations, and a proven track record in the specific areas aligned with this project.

The position is available from 1 January 2022 and is a 9 month position in the first instance, with the possibility of extension subject to mutual agreement, and availability of funding.

Further information and informal enquiries may be directed to Prof Allan Watson, email: aw260@st-andrews.ac.uk, Tel: 01334 46 7285.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in research posts at the University.

The University is committed to equality for all, demonstrated through our working on diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters, and Stonewall). Full details available online: http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi.
