Research Fellow - AR2048MR
School of Chemistry

School of Chemistry (and EaStCHEM), Salary: £32,548 - £35,550 per annum, Fixed Term: 12 months in the first instance, Start Date: 1 June 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter

Enhancing Performance in Polyanionic Cathode Materials

Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work in the laboratory of Prof Philip Lightfoot within the School of Chemistry. This is a collaborative project with Drs Robert Armstrong and Bela Bode (St Andrews) and Dr Serena Corr (Chemistry, University of Glasgow), the aim of which is to develop new compounds as cathode materials for lithium and sodium batteries. The target compounds of interest will be transition metal oxalates, phosphates, fluorides and related materials. The project will focus on their synthesis, structural and electrochemical characterisation and performance in battery applications. In addition to the experimental aspects of the project there will be an opportunity to interact with the computational group of Prof Saiful Islam (Bath) and also with industrial partners. This is a 12 month EPSRC-funded project available from 1 June 2018, with the possibility of extension to 36 months.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in Solid State/Materials Chemistry, Materials Science or a closely related discipline, ideally with a strong background in the preparation and characterisation of inorganic materials. Experience of electrochemical characterisation techniques would be an advantage but is not essential.

Informal enquiries can be made directly to Prof Phil Lightfoot (pl@st-andrews.ac.uk) or Tel: 01334 463841

Applications are particularly welcome from women, who are under-represented in Science posts at the University.

The University is committed to equality for all, demonstrated through our working on diversity awards (ECU Athena SWAN/Race Charters; Carer Positive; LGBT Charter; and Stonewall). More details can be found at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.

In 2018 the University will establish purpose built office accommodation at Guardbridge, by St Andrews, to provide a state of the art working environment for a number of our Professional Services Units. It is anticipated that up to 350 Professional Services staff from a range of Units will be based in the new development at Guardbridge.

This post will not be primarily based at Guardbridge.
