School of Geography and Sustainable Development, Salary: £32,548 - £33,518 per annum, Start: 1 December 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter, Fixed term for 2 years

Applications are invited for a 24-month postdoctoral research assistant to work on a NERC-funded project, “Carbon Dynamics and Distribution of Amazonian Peatlands”. This project aims to improve our understanding of the distribution of peatlands in Amazonia, from both empirical and process points of view.  

The post-holder will be required to help in the detailed planning of the data collection for the project. They will play a leading role in implementing fieldwork campaigns, and will be responsible for collecting high-quality data in the field and in the laboratory. They will be expected to take the lead in analysing and publishing the resulting datasets.  

The post includes opportunities to build experience in data analysis, remote sensing, numerical modelling, and ecological and palaeoecological techniques. Although the post will normally be based in St Andrews, it will involve extended periods of fieldwork in swamp forests in Amazonian Peru, and in other parts of the Amazon Basin. Applicants with a strong track record of tropical peatland research, especially involving extensive independent fieldwork, are encouraged to apply.
