The School of Chemistry aims to appoint a Solution State NMR Technician from 1 July 2016, or as soon as possible thereafter.

St Andrews School of Chemistry is a dynamic teaching and research environment with ~38 Academic staff, ~140 PhD students and 80 PDRAs. 

The solution state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility/service at St Andrews is a central analytical tool of the School. The NMR suite consists of six  instruments  operating mostly in automated open access regime at frequency’s of 700MHz (cryo), 2 x 500MHz (1 x cryo), 2 x 400MHz and a 300MHz. 

The NMR service is led by a Senior Scientific Officer (SSO) Dr T Lebl, who is supported by an NMR Technician. We now seek applications from outstanding individuals to replace the incumbent Technician who will retire in June 2016.

Interested applicants should already have a theory knowledge of NMR to undergraduate degree level (eg. B.Sc/MChem/MSci) in Chemistry or a closely allied subject. The successful applicant will be line managed by the Senior Scientific Officer.
 
Roles will include:

• To assist in the daily management of access to NMR services by the research community within the School.
• To assist in the support and management of NMR samples generated from the undergraduate teaching laboratory activity.
• To engage in commercial activity associated with the School offering NMR services to external customers.
• To assist cryogen management to the NMR instruments including the regular monitoring of cryogen levels and engaging in cryogen fills.
• To engage with external engineers involved in the maintenance of the current facility.
• To engage as directed by the SSO in all aspects of the development of the NMR facility to ensure its continual development as a front line analytical service.
• To participate in hosting UCAS applicants or high school pupils and teachers when they visit the NMR facility.
