The University of St Andrews invites applications to be the St Andrews Fellow in Theology & Science. This is 33-month postdoctoral fellowship, beginning January 2017.

The fellow’s primary responsibility is to pursue her or his research agenda, publishing both in established journals of science and religion as well as ‘mainstream’ theology journals where the subject may, so far, be overlooked. Secondary responsibilities include creating and teaching one new undergraduate course on some area of science and religion, contributing to other teaching modules as needed, and assisting with administrative responsibilities for a wider network of associated science and religion projects. Research Vision: The post is associated with a new, international project in theology and science based at St Andrews but involving universities from across the United States and European Union. Its goal is to promote exploration of a new generation of questions at the intersection of theology, religion, and the human and natural sciences. While previous generations have asked methodological questions—sometimes including challenges from scientists that cooperation with religion violates the norms of rationality, and from religious believers that science threatens orthodoxy—we take for granted that serious scholarly study always aspires to interdisciplinary cooperation. Rather than focusing chiefly on methodological questions, we are interested in research that brings these disciplines together in productive and creative ways. Qualifications: Applicants must hold a PhD in theology (broadly conceived) or a science. Advanced degrees in both theology/religion and a science are preferable. The successful candidate will have potential for world-class research at the intersection of theology and science, a clearly-defined research agenda that is both ambitious and achievable, and excellent teaching skills. Ideally, the candidate’s project and interests will complement existing strengths in the University’s School of Divinity.
