School of Geography and Sustainable Development Salary: £44,414 - £54,421 per annum* (£45,585 - £56,021 from 1 August 2023) Start Date: As soon as possible

The School of Geography and Sustainable Development seeks to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography. Applications are particularly welcome from candidates working in, but not limited to, the following areas: coasts, glaciers, or hazards. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in Geography or a related area and have interests and expertise which will contribute to and augment field and laboratory research and teaching.  

 

*Appointment at Grade 8 Senior Lecturer (salary range: £57,696 - £64,914 pa) will be considered for candidates with more experience/knowledge of the area, with the job description to be amended accordingly.  

 

The School of Geography and Sustainable Development is well known for world-leading research and teaching in Environmental Change, Development, Population Studies, Spatial Data Science, Health Geography, and Sustainability. According to the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, 94% of research by the School was classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. The School also has an outstanding reputation for high-quality teaching and was ranked fourth in the UK by The Guardian University Guide 2023, fourth by The Times Good University Guide 2023 and fifth by the Complete University Guide 2023. The School has 38 academic staff, 15 postdoctoral fellows and 42 PhD students, supported by two technicians and seven administrative staff.  

 

The School has three overlapping research groups – Environmental Change; Geographies of Society, Sustainability, Inequalities and Possibilities (GOSSIP); and Population and Health – and hosts the Bell-Edwards Geographic Data Institute, BEGIN (https://begin.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/).  

 

This appointment will be aligned with the Environmental Change group (Environmental change- School of Geography and Sustainable Development - University of St Andrews(st-andrews.ac.uk)) and will strengthen research connections between research groups, complement existing staff expertise, and build capacity for interdisciplinary work across the School’s research and teaching. The successful candidate will engage with School Strategy (School of Geographyand Sustainable Development Strategic Plan 2021-2026.pdf (st-andrews.ac.uk)), as well as contribute to the University’s Strategy (https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/about/governance/university-strategy/).   

 

Applicants should include a Cover Letter outlining: (a) how their research complements and augments the aims and strengths of the School’s Environmental Change Research Group; (b) their vision for field and laboratory teaching (topics, methods, and innovations); and (c) their ambitions for impact and/or outreach.  

 

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to teaching across a range of topics, programmes and levels, be active in research publication that strengthens and shapes School Strategy, and be capable of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds, and nurturing early career researchers. Their work should also foster links within the wider School and University, and with ambitions for and/or success with grant capture in relation to research councils and other national and international sources.
