Research Technician – TG1260MR
School of Earth & Environmental Sciences

School of Earth and Environmental Science, Salary: £23,487* per annum, pro rata, Fixed Term: 4 months, Start: As soon as possible

We seek to appoint a Research Technician for a fixed 4-month term to support our novel “Fire in the Earth” interdisciplinary research project. This project aims to advance societies understanding of ancient burn pit sites which was critical to early populations and their use of landscape. This project will utilize state-of-the-art Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) technology to compare soil profile mineral assemblages across several fire pits to assess if sites that are used for frequent ceremonial events are distinguishable from sites used only for transitory burning.

The successful candidate will work within the M3Ore lab facility to support the project under the guidance of Dr William McCarthy, lab PI, and Prof. Richard Bates, project PI. The M3Ore lab is a newly refurbished state of the art rock magnetics facility that houses a unique suite of cutting-edge magnetometers and spectrometers, including a new Lakeshore 7400 Vibrating Sample Magnetometer, designed to rapidly characterise the magnetic properties of natural soil, rock and mineral samples. The Research Technician will be required to follow an existing lab protocol to collect spectral and magnetic data from soil samples, write up new protocol and operate within the lab facility in a safe and efficient way under the direction of the lab PI.

*appointment at grade 5 will be considered for candidates with more knowledge/experience with the job description to be amended accordingly including more independent working and undertaking independent method development, writing and project work.

Further information and informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Richard Bates, email: crb@st-andrews.ac.uk, Tel: 01334 3997.

Applications are particularly welcome from people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in professional posts at the University.

We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.  Full details available online: https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/

In accordance with the new immigration rules, it is with regret that this role does not meet the current suitability requirements set by the UKVI to enable sponsorship of migrant workers.  The University encourages all interested candidates to apply regardless of nationality and all applications received are assessed against the essential and desirable criteria listed in the further particulars.  The successful candidate will have to demonstrate their right to work in the UK prior to commencing employment and where required, obtain the right to work in the UK without relying on University sponsorship.  Information on other visa options is available at https://www.gov.uk/check-uk-visa or by contacting our HR Immigration Team on hrimmigration@st-andrews.ac.uk.
