Research Fellow - AR2118HM

As part of an EPSRC-sponsored initiative between the universities of St Andrews and Edinburgh, we are seeking up to two postdoctoral research fellows. One will work primarily with Prof Peter Wahl using ultra-low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy in St Andrews, UK. The successful applicant will lead studies of emergent magnetic phases using spin-polarized STM, to characterize the magnetic order near metamagnetic phase transitions, quantum critical points as well as its influence on the electronic structure, building on expertise developed in the group [1]. The second will be with Prof Steve Lee and Prof Peter Wahl, to use both, spin-polarized STM as well as facility-based techniques such as muSR to characterize emergent magnetic states near surfaces and interfaces.

We seek outstanding candidates who can make contributions across the breadth of this research programme. The role will involve running state-of-the-art equipment for low temperature scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy installed in a new ultra-low vibration facility in St Andrews as well as involvement in facility-based experiments.  The role holder will perform original experimental research, as well as being involved in day-to-day supervision of students and making contributions to the broader activities of the research groups. The position is embedded in a vibrant
