Associate Lecturer (Education Focused) in Inorganic/Physical/Materials Chemistry - AOAC1946RXLS

The School of Chemistry at the University of St Andrews aims to appoint an Associate Lecturer (Education Focused) in Materials (Inorganic and Physical) Chemistry from 1 August 2025.

 

St Andrews Chemistry is a dynamic teaching and research environment with around 40 Academic staff, about 140 PhD students and 60 PDRAs. Our undergraduate courses are delivered across five years up to MChem level, with the option to specialise in Medicinal or Materials Chemstry at both BSc and MChem levels. In addition, the School runs postgraduate taught degrees (MSc Chemical Sciences and MSc Catalysis).

 

We welcome applications from outstanding candidates who have a passion for teaching and who have proven expertise in delivering undergraduate education imaginatively. This position will focus on materials/solid state inorganic and physical chemistry and the successful applicant will be expected to teach across the breadth of our undergraduate and taught postgraduate curriculum in areas appropriate to their expertise.

 

A PhD in an appropriate area of chemistry is essential, and you will already have experience of teaching at university level.

 

The successful applicant will report to the Director of Teaching and be required:

 

  1. To teach inorganic and physical chemistry at all levels of our undergraduate and taught postgraduate degree programmes through lectures, tutorials and laboratory classes.
  2.  To be involved in the organisation and delivery of inorganic and physical chemistry teaching (both lectures and laboratory classes).
  3.  To deliver innovation to enhance inorganic and physical chemistry teaching across our existing courses.
  4.  To help integrate different aspects of the inorganic and physical chemistry curriculum within a problem-based approach.
  5.  To develop student’s practical and analytical skills through development of existing and introduction of new innovative laboratory experiments at Sub-Honours and Honours levels.
  6.  To play a role in the administrative activities within the School.
  7.  To engage in the development of our courses through activities in the area of education research.
  8.  To play a role in the development and delivery of outreach activities.
