Deputy Security Manager – AD2117MR

The University of St Andrews is seeking a new Deputy Security Manager to support the management of the University Security Service, which is currently subject to an extensive change programme. As a key member of the security management team within Estates, you will play a vital role in developing the security service within the University during transition to a 24/7 capability and beyond.

Operating an out of hours service between 1900 and 0700 7 days a week and 0700 and 1900 at weekends and during closure periods, the security service currently comprises 9 security officers across three teams, with 3 Team Leaders having been recently appointed. 2 part-time Parking Wardens complete the existing staffing profile. A dedicated project manager is currently leading on the development of the existing service to provide a 24/7 capability, a new control room and staff facilities, an incident recording solution, and a suite of standard operating procedures.

Current security team duties include patrols to ensure the security of some 148 buildings across the university estate, including the Eden Campus at Guardbridge, responding to incidents and calls for service, and engaging with students and staff on a wide range of security related matters.

Key to excellent security provision within the university will be the delivery of a well-trained responsive, supportive, customer-centric service facilitated by ease of access 24/7. It is expected that the development of this philosophy through the current project will contribute to an exceptionally safe and secure environment in which staff and students can live, work and study, consistent with the university’s international reputation for excellence.

The Deputy Security Manager will have a principal role in assisting the Security Manager in the operational delivery and management of the service and staff as well as leading on initiatives towards new, auditable capabilities and processes. You will also be key to driving continuous improvement as the project moves beyond implementation.

You will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to demonstrate sound reasoning, empathy, tact and negotiating ability.

Previous experience in a people-centred security-related role is essential, as is the ability to lead and develop teams.

A current and valid United Kingdom driving licence and proven IT skills are also essential.
