Research Fellow - AR1995ML

Applications are invited for a 5-month Research Fellow to work on a Scottish Funding Council Overseas Development-funded project, “Valuing intact tropical peatlands”. This project aims to improve our understanding socio-cultural and economic value of peatlands in Amazonia.

The post-holder will be required to help in the detailed planning of the data collection for the project, including co-ordination with a concurrent natural/environmental science project working at the same sites. They will play a leading role in implementing the fieldwork necessary for the project, and will be responsible for collecting high-quality, largely qualitative data in the field. They will be expected to take the lead in analysing the resulting data and collaborate with colleague to begin the process of dissemination to both academic and stakeholder groups.

The post includes opportunities to build experience in qualitative data collection (likely to include participatory mapping, interviews and focus groups), and subsequent data analysis. The post will be based in St Andrews, but will involve a period of fieldwork (approximately two months) with rural communities living in and around peatland forests in Amazonian Peru. Applicants with a strong track record of geographical, sociological, anthropological or area studies field research in tropical forests are encouraged to apply.

The University is committed to equality for all, demonstrated through our working on diversity awards (ECU Athena SWAN/Race Charters; Carer Positive; LGBT Charter; and Stonewall).  More details can be found at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.
