Computing Officer (Academic Computing) - AD2860

The University is looking for a talented and motivated individual to join the Academic Computing team within IT Services, in the role of Computing Officer. Based primarily in the School of Physics and Astronomy, this role is key to supporting worldleading research and teaching by delivering robust, innovative and secure computing infrastructure.

The role focuses on providing technical expertise and operational support across a diverse range of computational environments used by academic colleagues. Working closely with researchers, teaching staff, and specialist technical teams, you will provide bespoke support to meet the evolving needs of worldclass research and teaching.

The role holder will draw upon strong system administration experience to deliver flexible, scalable and secure solutions using Linux and Windows systems and virtualisation, containerisation and automation technologies. You will build strong relationships across the research community, developing a deep understanding of specialist software, experimental workflows and research computing requirements.

The role requires you to proactively monitor and maintain computing infrastructure, support the deployment of bespoke solutions, provide technical advice to research groups, be responsible for asset management processes, and contribute to lifecycle planning, procurement and documentation. You will also collaborate with colleagues across IT Services to ensure compliance with data protection legislation, security policies and best practice in cyber resilience.

The role is a permanent position and will offer you the chance to contribute to the University’s strategic goals by shaping the digital tools and environments that underpin worldclass research and teaching. You will be part of a knowledgeable, supportive and forwardthinking team committed to continuous improvement and technical excellence.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in supporting cuttingedge scientific research while developing your own expertise in modern infrastructure technologies. If you are eager to make a meaningful impact, thrive in a collaborative environment, and enjoy solving complex technical challenges, we would be delighted to receive your application.
