Lecturer/Reader/Professor (one faculty position in theoretical physics) - AC1354SB

The School of Physics & Astronomy is seeking to recruit a Lecturer, Reader, or Professor in theoretical physics, in either condensed matter physics, or at the interface between condensed matter physics and photonics. The School is internationally recognised for its research (http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/physics-astronomy/research/) in the areas of condensed matter physics, photonics and astronomy. The research in the School is focussed in interdisciplinary research centres; within condensed matter physics, it hosts the Centre for Designer Quantum Materials (https://www.quantummatter.co.uk/) with a unique suite of spectroscopic tools for the synthesis and characterisation of quantum materials. Research in the School ranges from electronic states stabilized in advanced materials to non-equilibrium polaritonic states studied experimentally and theoretically at the interface between condensed matter and photonics, and the theoretical physics of open quantum systems.  The successful applicant will develop and lead a research programme in theoretical physics relevant to and linking to these areas.

Applicants should have a strong track record in research creativity and present a clear vision of how they will develop a research programme that expands and complements our existing research strengths.  They should also show clear potential for, and commitment to, high-quality teaching.  The level of appointment will depend on experience.  Applicants with well-established research portfolios, together with a proven ability to secure research funding and establish national and international collaborations will be considered for Reader positions. Applicants with a record of securing significant grant funding and leading a high quality externally funded research programme will be considered for Professor positions.

Informal enquiries are welcome and should be addressed to Prof. Ian Bonnell (hospanda@st-andrews.ac.uk), Prof. Jonathan Keeling (jmjk@st-andrews.ac.uk) or Prof. Natalia Korolkova (nvk@st-andrews.ac.uk)

Applications are particularly welcome from those with a commitment to the School and University's aspirations towards equality, diversity and inclusivity. The School has Juno Champion status, which recognises physics departments who take action to embed better working practices for all staff and to address the under-representation of women in UK and Irish universities, and holds an Athena Swan Silver award. The University Strategy has “Diverse St Andrews” as one of its key themes and acknowledges an institutional priority towards greater racial and ethnic diversity. We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter and Race Charters). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME), LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.  For more information, please see www.st-andrews.ac.uk/physics/equalityanddiversity/, www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/ and https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/about/governance/university-strategy/diverse/

Applications should include:

A cover letter indicating the level of appointment sought by the applicant (though the selection committee will not be bound by this indication)A full curriculum vitae including a list of refereed publications, key conference contributions and contact details for three referees.

A further document of not more than six pages in total that will include:

  • A list of research achievements to date (One to two pages)
