The School of Geography and Sustainable Development is seeking to recruit four new academic staff to contribute to its research and teaching excellence, including supporting an evolving approach to digital teaching. We wish to appoint new Lecturers (equivalent to Assistant Professor)* to join the School’s vibrant community, which is ranked among the top venues for Geography and Sustainable Development research and teaching in the UK.
The School seeks dynamic, collegial individuals who value research and teaching excellence to support the development of a new digitally-taught (chiefly distance learning) postgraduate programme Data Literacy for Social and Environmental Justice. The goal of the programme is to teach students the basics of how to read, understand, and use quantitative methods to address pressing social and environmental questions with implications for justice and equality.
We welcome applicants with expertise in quantitative methods and modelling, who are working in one or more of the following areas: physical geography (e.g., environmental/climate change), human geography/demography (e.g., health/migration/economic inequities), and/or spatial data science (including methods innovation and data visualisation). An interest in using quantitative methods to address social and environmental justice issues is essential, and candidates able to contribute to teaching in the research/policy overlap are particularly welcome. Applicants will be expected to think critically and creatively about research and teaching to strengthen connections across the School and wider University.
You should hold a PhD in Geography or cognate area in the environmental or social sciences. Excellent teaching skills and an interest in promoting knowledge exchange and impact are essential. You should also have some familiarity with grant seeking processes in relation to research councils and other sources.
* Appointment at Associate Lecturer (Grade 6, salary £35,333-£42,155) will be considered for candidates with less knowledge/experience of the area, with the job description altered accordingly and a training package put in place to bring them up to Grade 7 over an expected period of 2-4 years.
Informal enquiries can be directed to Professor Dan Clayton (gsdhos@st-andrews.ac.uk) and/or Dr Jo Hale (Jo.Hale@st-andrews.ac.uk).
Applications are particularly welcome from people who identify as being Black, Asian, Latinx, minority ethnic, LGTBQ+, and/or other protected characteristics who are under-represented in academic posts at the University. Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience. We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall).
