This is a 4-year
fixed-term post, with a possible promotion after 2 years. We are looking for an outstanding teacher in
Statistics to join us in delivering our highly-rated programme of teaching at
undergraduate and taught postgraduate level.
For post-holders wishing to pursue a combined research and teaching
track, and demonstrating suitable research potential, there is the option of a
standard lecturer position after 2 years.
We welcome applications from candidates who
hold, or will shortly hold, a PhD in Statistics or a closely-related
discipline; have teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level;
have experience applying relevant analytical skills and teaching techniques to
a wide range of learners; have good communication skills and share our desire
to educate and inform students.
Experience in statistics module development and/or in problem-based
learning methods will be an advantage, as will demonstrable ability to work in
a team.
The post-holder will teach modules in statistics
that may be at a range of levels from first year undergraduate to taught
Masters level. They will also supervise
final-year undergraduate and Masters dissertation projects; these latter
projects take place over the summer.
Conditional on performance, we anticipate
offering promotion to a higher grade after 2 years. This would be either Lecturer (Education
Focused) or Lecturer (Education and Research), depending on the preference of
the post-holder and their suitability for these roles.
The post is intended to cover a 4-year
teaching replacement, which may itself be renewed, and so there is the
possibility of a longer-term position with the School.
For informal enquiries, we encourage those considering applying to
contact the Head of School, Professor Mark Chaplain (mathshos@st-andrews.ac.uk) and/or the Joint Heads of Statistics, Professor Len
Thomas (len.thomas@st-andrews.ac.uk)
and Professor Andy Lynch (andy.lynch@st-andrews.ac.uk) and/or Director of Teaching, Dr. Antonia Wilmot-Smith (maths-dot@st-andrews.ac.uk) to
discuss possibilities.
We are fully committed to equality and diversity
in our recruitment and employment policies.
We operate family-friendly hours for core meetings and are happy to
discuss flexible working arrangements for staff.
Applications are particularly welcome from
women, people from the Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community and
other protected characteristics who are underrepresented in academic posts at
the University.
The University of St Andrews is committed to
equality for all, demonstrated though our working on diversity awards (ECU
Athena SWAN/Race Charters; Carer Positive; LGBT Charter and Stonewall). More details can be found at https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.
