Collections Manager - CG1676SB

The Museums of the University of St Andrews exist to develop and care for our collections and to make these accessible to all. We are a museum that has a central role within a world class University – using our museums and collections to enrich the experiences of all our audiences - academics, students and the wider community.

This mission supports the University strategy and ambition – aligned to the five core ideas of social responsibility, world-leading, diverse, global and entrepreneurial St Andrews; demonstrating a determination to move forward with purpose, integrity, and success: Ever to Excel.

The vision for the Museums of the University of St Andrews is to be recognised world leaders in the use of museum collections to create opportunities for people to engage with ideas and research for wider public benefit. The Museums will be recognised as a cultural hub - a place of innovation and experimentation that embodies the spirit of research, a forum for meetings of minds and a space for learning, conversation, provocation and action. This is underpinned by our objective to develop and maintain world-leading collections for use by the global academic community, supported with high quality to collections management and care.

We are in an exciting period of development. Our main public museum, the Wardlaw Museum (formerly MUSA), is reopening in Spring 2020 following the building of an extension accommodating significant new temporary exhibition space. This will enable us to grow our exhibitions programme to include touring exhibitions and high-profile loan and partnership opportunities. A larger reception area and retail space will be built to expand visitor facilities. The closure has also allowed us to redevelop the four permanent galleries, to showcase the scope and quality of our collections and inspire our audiences with our world-leading research history. As part of this we are also designing new public programmes, learning and access projects and a programme of student engagement.

We are recruiting for a Collections Manager to work on the installation phase of the Wardlaw Museum re-development and extension project, focussing on collections care and logistics as well as maintenance and development of Collections Management procedures for the project and beyond.

You need to be motivated, organised, an excellent communicator and solution focussed. You should hold a good first degree and a postgraduate qualification or have equivalent museum, gallery or conservation experience working with heritage objects. You should have experience of planning and delivering collections management projects.

This is a full-time post, fixed term for 7 months.
