Research Fellow in Advanced Optical Imaging – AR2492MR
School of Physics and Astronomy
Vacancy Description
School of Physics and Astronomy, Salary: £33,797 - £40,322 per annum, Fixed Term: Up to 2 years, Start: As soon as possible
Applications are invited for a Research Fellow to work on a European Union-funded project. The work is based within the Optical Manipulation Group in the School of Physics and Astronomy ( The group aims to build upon a range of internationally recognized work in the area of photonics and its applications at St Andrews. The specific topic area of this post is the development of new techniques in advanced optical imaging in biophotonics and their translation to clinical research.

We are particularly interested in researchers with prior experience in one or more of: multiphoton imaging; light sheet imaging; temporal-focusing microscopy; imaging through optical fibre and scattering media; the development and application of numerical methods of deep learning or multivariate analysis. The post is for up to two years, subject to satisfactory completion of a 12-month probationary period.

The post-holder will be required to undertake both experimental work and numerical studies. They will play a leading role in developing and implementing new optical imaging modalities in free space and through optical fibre, novel forms of light sheet microscopy, temporal focusing microscopy and other approaches to imaging at depth. The imaging will be conducted with a range of biological samples, including zebrafish and other marine organisms, and human tissue. The project will address challenges in neurodegenerative disease and multimodal functional imaging.

Start Date: As soon as possible.

Informal enquiries (NOT full applications) to: Professor Kishan Dholakia,

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian, Minority or Ethnic (BAME) community and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in research posts at the University.
