Lecturer in Statistics (2 posts) – AC3554GB

The University of St Andrews is seeking to enhance its strengths in statistics by appointing 2 new Lecturers (1 standard contract and one fixed-term contract**). We are looking for scholars with outstanding potential and hence we are advertising flexibly across two roles, Lecturer in Statistics (Education Focused*) or Lecturer in Statistics (Education and Research).

*Applications from candidates who wish to apply for Associate Lecturer (Education Focused) at Grade 6 (salary £35,333-£42,155) may also be considered, and if appointed the job description would be adapted accordingly.

** Fixed-term until 30 June 2027. The post is to provide cover for staff secondment. As such, the need for the post will cease to exist upon the return of the substantive post holder.

Successful candidates for the Education and Research role will have a strong and growing international research reputation and commitment to delivering high quality teaching. We welcome applications from across the broad spectrum of statistics, and particularly from candidates whose research could link with existing research strengths in St Andrews, including ecological and environmental statistics, medical statistics, and statistical ‘omics’. We are especially keen to appoint candidates with strength in statistical machine learning methods and/or with strength in statistical methodology.

Successful candidates for the Education Focused role will be inspirational teachers in statistics committed to delivering and enhancing our highly-rated programme of teaching at undergraduate and taught postgraduate level and will have experience in curriculum development.

We welcome applications from candidates who hold a PhD in statistics or a closely related discipline. Candidates should have teaching experience at undergraduate or postgraduate level, have experience applying relevant analytical skills and teaching techniques to a wide range of learners, have good communication and teamwork skills, and share our desire to educate and inform students.

For informal enquiries, contact the Head of School, Professor Mark Chaplain (mathshos@st-andrews.ac.uk), co-Head of the Statistics Division, Professor Len Thomas (len.thomas@st-andrews.ac.uk), or the Deputy Head of School, Dr Antonia Wilmot-Smith (aw37@st-andrews.ac.uk).

We are fully committed to equality and diversity in our recruitment and employment policies. We operate family-friendly hours for core meetings and are happy to discuss flexible working arrangements for staff. In accordance with the new immigration rules, it is with regret that applying for this role on a part-time basis does not meet the current suitability requirements set by the UKVI to enable sponsorship of migrant workers.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian, Minority or Ethnic (BAME) community and other protected characteristics who are underrepresented in Academic posts at the University.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience. We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.
