Research Fellow – AR2913HM

We are seeking a talented and creative postdoctoral research fellow to join our ERC/UKRI-funded project: “GLOBAL-EX: A GLOBAL theory for EXtreme land temperatures in a changing climate”. The overarching goal of GLOBAL-EX is to use a hierarchy of climate models, observations and physical theory to advance scientific understanding of extreme temperatures. The successful candidate will join a GLOBAL-EX team of 4-5 researchers and will have flexibility to work on aspects of the project that align with their research interests and experience. The position is initially available for two years, with the possibility of extension depending on funding availability.

The successful candidate will become a member of the vibrant St Andrews Climate DynamicsLab in the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences. The Lab, led by Dr Michael Byrne, is a team of researchers using a range of numerical models, observations and theory to advance fundamental understanding of the climate system. Topics we work on include extreme temperatures, continental climate change, the large-scale water cycle, tropical atmospheric circulation and cloud-circulation coupling & feedbacks. The candidate will also become a member of the Climate, Ocean, and Atmosphere at St Andrews (COASt) research group which has broad expertise across paleoclimate, climate dynamics, oceanography, ocean biogeochemistry and atmospheric dynamics. The GLOBAL-EX project will also involve collaboration and networking with national and international colleagues.

Strong candidates will have:

•    A PhD or equivalent (or shortly expected to achieve) in climate science, atmospheric science, physics, mathematics, geoscience, or a related quantitative field;

•    An understanding of physical processes relating to climate and the atmospheric circulation;

•    Experience of analysing output from climate models and observational datasets;

·     Experience running climate models;

•    Good programming skills in Python or another data processing and visualisation language.

Employees of the University have access to a wide range of staff benefits including:

·       Annual leave of 34 days, plus 5 public holidays

·       Financial contribution to relocation

·       Membership of the USS Pension Scheme with generous employer contributions

·       A hybrid working environment, including partial homeworking where appropriate and a range of family friendly policies

·       Staff discount scheme for local and national goods and services

·       Free staff parking, employee Carshare and Cycle to Work Schemes and subsidised local bus travel

·       Subsidised sports membership, reduced tuition fees on degree programmes for staff/children of staff, access to library facilities, salary sacrifice scheme and a range of wellbeing initiatives

Informal enquiries can be addressed to Dr Michael Byrne (GLOBAL-EX Principal Investigator) at mpb20@st-andrews.ac.uk.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in research posts at the University.

Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience.  We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.  Full details available online: https://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/
