The Sea Mammal Research Unit wishes to appoint a Head of the Instrumentation Group. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a unique group of engineers and scientists developing innovative solutions for the study of animals in the marine environment.
The successful candidate will be a senior scientific research professional with a strong track record of leading teams and facilitating the development of technological solutions to the study of the marine environment. A good understanding of instrumentation technology and electronic engineering under severe constraints of size and energy is required.
The successful candidate will also be an outstanding researcher in the fields of animal behaviour, ecology, and/or physiology with a strong track record of leadership in facilitating the development of technological solutions to study animals particularly in the marine environment.
The successful candidate will also be expected to prominently represent the University of St Andrews in the UK and international communities. Candidates will be expected to provide leadership to the SMRU Instrumentation Group by working with staff and outside scholars and agencies to develop and use new marine animal-based sensors. The successful candidate will work with senior engineering colleagues and will manage to Group to ensure the delivery of excellence in tag design and production.
The successful candidate will have experience in programme and resource management, excellent communication skills with the ability to interact with a range of stakeholders coupled with strong influencing and negotiation skills and an ability to engage others.
The successful candidate will also be a member of the Management Group of the Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) and so will be expected to work with the Directors of SMRU and SOI and other senior colleagues across the University.
*Appointment at grade 9 (salary negotiable) will be considered for candidates who are outstanding researchers in the fields of animal behaviour, ecology, and/or physiology with a strong track record of leadership in facilitating the development of technological solutions to study animals, particularly in the marine environment with the job description to be amended accordingly.
