Lecturer in Applied Mathematics - AC2172AS

We are looking for an outstanding researcher and teacher in Applied Mathematics to work with members of the Vortex Dynamics research group in the School of Mathematics and Statistics.  The group studies a wide range of topics in fluid dynamics, principally in atmosphere/ocean dynamics (including planetary atmospheres), with particular emphasis on fundamental research.  Topics range from the banded circulation patterns seen on Jupiter to the regularity of the Navier-Stokes equations.  The group’s website (www-vortex.mcs.st-and.ac.uk) provides further details, a list of the people involved, and samples of the research they do.

We welcome applications from outstanding researchers in any area of Applied Mathematics, including research areas that could complement, link with, or enhance existing strengths.  The Vortex Dynamics group is a world leader in specialised, efficient numerical techniques applied mainly to study models of fluid flow.  Computation is used to confirm analysis but also to probe the nonlinear behaviour of complex flows such as turbulence, often leading to new ideas for analysis.  We very much see computation and analysis as a productive two-way feedback loop.  There are opportunities for collaboration with our School’s Statistics, Pure Mathematics and other Applied Mathematics groups.  We are also keen to build growing links with the Schools of Physics and Astronomy, and of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

For informal enquiries, we encourage those considering applying to contact the Head of School, Professor Thomas Neukirch (mathshos@st-andrews.ac.uk), the Deputy Head of School, Professor Ineke De Moortel (idm2@st-andrews.ac.uk) and/or the Head of the Vortex Dynamics research group, Professor David Dritschel  (david.dritschel@st-andrews.ac.uk) to discuss possibilities.

Applications are particularly welcome from women who are under-represented in Science posts at the University. You can find out more about Equality and Diversity at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/.
