Applications are sought for a Research Fellow to work with Professor Tom Jones and colleagues on a British Academy-funded project The Oxford Edition of the Writings of Alexander Pope, Volumes I and II: Textual Study of the Early Poems (Works 1717). The RA’s primary duties will be to assist the team of volume editors in consulting copies of the Works and the poems it contains and in finalising the texts, commentaries and apparatus for presentation to the publisher.
The successful applicant will have (or be near to completion of) a PhD that involves advanced bibliographical and/or editorial work, preferably in eighteenth-century studies.
The post is available for a period of six weeks worked between September 2023 and June 2024 on a schedule to be agreed between the successful applicant and Professor Jones.
Overall project description
The Oxford Edition of the Writings of Alexander Pope will provide critical texts of all Pope’s writings, original and translated, in verse and prose. This project relates to work on volumes I and II of the edition and focuses on the completion of historical collations and textual accounts for the poems to be included, those of Pope’s Works 1717.
