Research Fellow (Vortex Dynamics) – AR2365DD

The Vortex Dynamics Research Group, in the School of Mathematics and Statistics, seeks to appoint a Research Fellow to further develop and apply a novel approach to studying moist convection occurring in cloud formation.  This will make use of a new Lagrangian-based “Moist Parcel-In-Cell” (MPIC) method developed in the last few years with Dr Steef Boeing, Professor Alan Blyth and Professor Doug Parker at the University of Leeds, who are co-investigators on this EPSRC-funded project.  The aim is to develop MPIC into a model that can be used widely to study the dynamical, physical and chemical processes in clouds, which are a major source of uncertainty in climate and weather models.   Using MPIC, it will be possible to provide a highly detailed and efficient representation of these processes.  Notably, for high performance computing, the method has been parallelised with the help of the Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre (EPCC), specifically Dr Gordon Gibb, who is also a co-investigator on the project.

Applicants should have a PhD in applied mathematics (or cognate subject like atmospheric dynamics), a track record in mathematical or fluid dynamical research, and excellent computational skills. Previous experience in atmospheric modelling (or of turbulent flows) and a knowledge of computational modelling techniques (including parallel computing) is highly desirable. Applicants should demonstrate an ability to work closely with other researchers as part of a team.

The post is for 48 months with a start date of no later than 1 February 2021.
