The bacterial type III CRISPR and CBASS anti-viral immune systems operate by generating a cyclic nucleotide second messenger to signal and combat infection. We wish to recruit a postdoctoral research fellow to study the molecular microbiology and in particular focus on the mechanism by which cyclic nucleotides are generated in response to viral/phage infection, how they function as downstream messengers in cellular defence systems, and how viruses overcome this defence. The successful applicant will have a PhD degree in Molecular Microbiology or a related field and experience in the study of bacteriophage and their interactions with bacterial hosts.
The post, which is available from 5 January 2022 for 3 years in the first instance, is funded by an ERC advanced grant. This project is based in the laboratory of Malcolm White in the Biomedical Sciences Research Complex at the University of St Andrews. You will join a well-resourced, dynamic group working on aspects of prokaryotic anti-viral defence systems.
Informal enquiries are encouraged and can be made to Professor Malcolm White (e-mail: mfw2@st-andrews.ac.uk) or Dr Larissa Krüger (lmak1@st-andrews.ac.uk).
Applications are particularly welcome from women, people from the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) community, and other protected characteristics who are under-represented in research posts at the University.
Equality, diversity and inclusion are at the heart of the St Andrews experience. We strive to create a fair and inclusive culture demonstrated through our commitment to diversity awards (Athena Swan, Carer Positive, LGBT Charter, Race Charters and Stonewall). We celebrate diversity by promoting profiles of BAME, LGBTIQ+ staff and supporting networks including the Staff BAME Network; Staff with Disabilities Network; Staff LGBTIQ+ Network; and the Staff Parents & Carers Network.
