Professor in Health Data Science – AC2171MR

The University of St. Andrews wishes to appoint a Professor in Health Data Science. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and successful group within the School of Medicine. The successful applicant will work with colleagues in the wide local and national healthcare arenas to create and exploit strategic data and informatics opportunities at the interface with the NHS. The appointment is part of a strategic plan to further strengthen our research excellence in informatics, bioinformatics and data science applied to epidemiological and health services research. We aim to consolidate this expertise and ensure that we are a leading contributor to UK health data science research through, for example, membership of Health Data Research UK as part of the Scottish Consortium.

Applicants should have a strong track record in Data Science applied to health research. We are particularly interested in candidates able to contribute to our priority areas: developing enabling technologies and methods to support data-driven discovery science; using data linkage to enhance public and population health research; and informing clinical decision making through building and evaluating learning health systems.

Health and biomedical informatics research is a strategic area of expansion for the University of St Andrews. The work will be multi-disciplinary and conducted alongside colleagues in Computer Science, Psychology and Neuroscience, Geography and Sustainable Development, Mathematics and Statistics. We will bring cutting-edge analytical tools and methodologies from other disciplines into Health Data Research. Working alongside substantive and other partnership sites in Scotland and the UK, as well as our networks in the EU and Canada, our focus will be on the application of modelling and machine learning to data derived from electronic medical records (EMRs) and other data linked to EMRs. Efficient recruitment of study subjects to interventional research, including clinical trials, will be a particular focus. The research will be underpinned by methodological work on record linkage and ethics. The initial clinical exemplar areas will include: the development, verification and testing of predictive models, including simulations; antimicrobial resistance; and environmental and behavioural impacts on health.

The post will start as soon as possible.

Applications are particularly welcome from women, who are under-represented in Science posts at the University.

The University is committed to equality for all, demonstrated through our working on diversity awards (ECU Athena SWAN/Race Charters; Carer Positive; LGBT Charter; and Stonewall). More details can be found at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.
