Research Fellow (Virology) – AR2332MR

Viruses are completely dependent upon their host cells energy and molecular machinery to replicate. Mitochondria are the powerhouses of the cell; this key cellular organelle plays a central role in generating the cells chemical energy and act as a signaling platform to activate innate (interferon) immune responses to counteract viral infection and replication. We wish to recruit a research fellow to study various aspects of the role of mitochondria on viral infection and to investigate the virus-mitochondrial interface as a target for therapeutic intervention. In particular, we will focus on respiratory viral infections including human Respiratory Syncytial Virus (HRSV) and Human Parainfluenza Virus (HPIV). The successful applicant will have a PhD degree in the Life Sciences and experience in the areas of virology, molecular biology and cell biology. Experience in the areas of mitochondrial function and dynamics and/or innate immunity would be advantageous.

The post is available from 1st May 2020 and will be for 1 year in the first instance, with a possibility to extend by up to 2 further years. The project is based in the laboratory of Dr Catherine Adamson in the Biomedical Sciences Research Complex (BSRC) Willie Russell Laboratories at the University of St Andrews. You will join a department with 10 independent research groups that have virology-focused research interests.

Informal enquiries are strongly encouraged and can be made to Dr Catherine Adamson (e-mail: csa21@st-andrews.ac.uk).

The University is committed to equality for all, demonstrated through our working on diversity awards (ECU Athena SWAN/Race Charters; Carer Positive; LGBT Charter; and Stonewall). More details can be found at http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/hr/edi/diversityawards/.
